What Learners Praise
Hands-on first, lecture that “clicks.” Bedside scanning + plain-English physics and memorable analogies; concepts finally “fit together.”
Confidence boost. Many arrived anxious or brand-new; most left feeling ready to scan independently and “work as an equal” with peers.
Patient, committed instructors. Repeated shout-outs to Keith, Tara, and Molly for clarity, energy, and relentless support.
Practical structure & protocol. Clear, repeatable step-by-step methods; strong linkage of anatomy, physiology, and pathology.
Small-group feel. Individual attention, supportive vibe, “felt like family,” and open after-hours lab time.
Better than alternatives. Frequent comparisons favoring KMA over other well-known courses and conferences.
Outcomes (in their words)
“...demystified” echo and physics."
“...best course I’ve ever attended.”
“...confidence skyrocketed.”
“...ready to take this back to my clinic.”
Many plan to return and recommend to Colleagues.
Suggestions & Wishes
More time...
Longer courses or second week; more evening lab, especially for left-handed scanning
Add structure/media...
Daily schedules/syllabi; more case studies and film/video clips; brighter/larger writing in lab
Paths by experience...
Separate tracks for true beginners vs. practicing sonographers who want fine-tuning
Future topics requested...
Registry Review, Advanced Echo, Pediatric Echo, Stress Echo,
Diastolic Dysfunction, Thyroid, and more hands-on critique sessions.

My overall experience during this course has been very good. Without not always knowing how, I learned much more than I realized. Lectures were great, stories inspirational. More lecture time would be good.

This has been as good as (the) Sid Edelman physics course. This was my first time to try echo exams. This was my first time to ever “see” an echo exam. I had no idea what to expect. I was very anxious about not knowing the heart anatomy or flow direction. I appreciate the approach on the very 1st day—I was able to watch others scan until I felt comfortable. I regret that I did not have more time to stay longer in the evenings to practice my scanning skills (left-handed). That will have to take practice on my own when back at our facility. You have given me the confidence to continue. Knowledge is a powerful tool. The pressure on Wednesday shut me down—I did not remember the info (or) gain info, and I felt I had to start over. That was a step backward for me. I lived and you didn’t take away my birthday. I am upward bound and back on track. Good info. Hope to be able to apply this info in the near future and hope we can make a return visit to the echo course in the next 2-3 years when our facility is ready for the new adventure in echo. Look forward to my third trip to KMA.

I have enjoy(ed) all the class and I have learn(ed) a lot and I thank you for your patients (sic) and the time for scan(ning) with me. I will tell my department about sending more persons for their training. I thank you so much.

This is the first time I’ve attended and echo-related conference. It’s been a very helpful and knowledgeable experience. And this program has helped me greatly to understand the “why” I’m doing most of, if not all of my studies. These classes have definitely given me the confidence to work as an equal with my peers at Sanger clinic instead of feeling on the bottom end of the stick. I really want to say THANK YOU Tara and Keith for supplying me with the knowledge I need to make it. And like an addict I want to keep coming back!!

This has been better than Edelman/Barton Bean. Great hands-on. Thank you for your patience with me. Very informative, interesting lectures! Motivators!

★★★★★
It is a wonderful experience! Including the ups and downs. Everything was explained on a level to meet my needs and what I didn’t understand—it was explained until I finally got it: not only by my instructors but by my classmates. Thank you for helping me expand my knowledge and world even more! I want you to offer a course on helping me get ready for Registry.

I have felt really at home here. Tara is a great teacher at this stuff. The lecture is great—Keith keeps you awake through it all and interested. I know that I will get this stuff. Your courses are very good. Thanks.

★★★★★
“Superb teaching”; the best in the field. Keith’s analogies are what make(s) the difference. This has been better than most. Despite my many years in echo, each day here was worth the entire fee for me. Very few people or organizations show the person the knowledge and commitment you demonstrate. Good luck in the future. Never stop teaching. I want you to offer a course on Pediatric Echo and Diastolic Dysfunction.
-S.K.S.
★★★★
This has been better the SDMS Review seminars. I feel the course should be much longer to allow for more hands-on. Personally, I felt OK, but some students who had never scanned seemed to have a more difficult time. I enjoyed Keith’s lecture; he is an interesting speaker. I did OK with Tara’s teaching style, but many others were nervous. I understand why she was very tough. I have never worked with cardiologists, but they must be hell on wheels. I am grateful to have a good training facility in the (Dallas/Ft. Worth) metroplex and I would return for other seminars. I want you to offer a course specifically for Registry Reviews.

★★★★
This has been better than any OSRC conference. I have really learned from my short time here. I never had the melt down phase here at the course, so I expect it is coming. I was happy to see that people who thought they knew so much on day one, realized they were on the same level as all of us, this group of people really grew on each other fast. Keith lectures very well and keeps an interest in the topics by his stories and Philosophies. Tara is good in the lab. She genuinely cares. I think this is a good course but just needs to be spread out some just to soak it all in.

★★★★★
I have learn(ed) a great deal out of their training course. I have never done ultrasound of the heart or anything for that matter. That now when I go home, I will be able to do echo without any problems. And I will be the best at what I am doing. The lecture(s) were so simple and good. My stay here has being (sic) a good one. I can be more greatly for your course because I have learned from your lecture a lot. I wish I could have spent more time here because your lectures are very simple to understand. My God bless to everyone who has been wonderful.

I feel that I came here and learned what I wanted to learn. Lecture was very good. I enjoyed listening to Keith. The one think (sic) that would have been nice would have been a schedule for the week or possibly a syllabus. I felt a little lost the first couple of days. Some issues could have been handled differently but in the end was taken care of.
-J.E.D.
★★★
The lectures were very well organized to the written material and very well interspersed with inspirational stories. The messages were great.

The material is very comprehensible. With no medical background I was able to work through all the material. The hands-on Echo Lab was Great. Wonderful Instruction. I want you to offer a course on Stress Echo.

Learned loads and hope to put it to good use in the future. You all are some of the best and I want to be some of the best! Thank you, so much for your patience. People were all nice and it was a great learning experience for me. I hope to return for advanced echo, interpretation and may start a satellite training program for Oklahoma. All medicine should be good: the echo done in small town USA should look like it as done at Mayo Clinic.

It has definitely been a good experience for me. I’m glad I did it because I achieved my goals and no can take that away from me. Yesterday (day four) was the worst and also the best day for me. You showed me yesterday that the students are very important to you. I hope when I get back, that I can get some valuable experience and clinical time and use my newly gained skills. If I do continue in this profession I would definitely consider KMA for my education. At first, I did not agree with the teaching methods, but on the other hand, I feel like I know my “Stuff” so I guess it worked. Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this great course and profession. To Keith and Tara: Thank you both, from the bottom of my heart. Or should I say from my 4-chamber Apical View. I wish you both the best, and I’m overall content and happy I attended and succeeded in this course.

I feel that I have learned a lot from this course. I have enjoyed the session even though it has been long and tiring. Even when it’s been a little confusing it has all come together. I like the repetition and the crazy illustrations; it helps to remembering and getting it to soak in and it’s easier to understand when it’s illustrated in different ways. I feel very motivated and excited about going back to the clinic and start doing echoes. Both of you are very motivating. I have enjoyed this course and feel that it has been very beneficial to me. I’m ready to do echoes. I thank you Tara and Keith for all you’ve done for us. Both of you are very motivating.

Thank you for all your efforts and time. I came from no medical background (dentistry). I didn’t even know how to hold the probe! Though I know that I will acquire more expertise through experience, I Know that I have the best background as my starting point. This has been a great start to an interesting future! I will take everything and make myself know it thoroughly. I will and I can know that I know where to start. Thank you, thank you.

★★★★★
Excellent! This has been better than any class I have ever attended. This class was wonderful. Tara explained everything on a level that I, myself could learn and retain. She always made sure each person knew all the skills before leaving class. Keith’s lecture fit right into what Tara had explained before and after class. I would recommend this class to anyone learning ultrasound of any technology. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me! This has been a very powerful learning experience for me as well as all the other students in this class. I hope to see you again. Thank you, Keith, Tara.
-Lee Roach-Bell
★★★★★
This has been better than most. I was very anxious and afraid. I thought that I was not going to acquire enough knowledge to perform echoes in just two weeks. I even voiced this to my boss before I left for the course of study. But now, just midway of my studies, I believe “I can do it”. I’ve learned to do just as Tara and Keith said and to subject myself to learning. It has already surpassed anything I could have imagined.

★★★★★
This has been an exceptional learning experience for me. I have learned so much during hands-on cardiac imaging. The lectures backed up everything I learned in the hands-on lab. It’s like a big puzzle being pieced together slowly, but eventually it all pulls together. The hands-on Doppler course has helped me to prepare for my own clinical experience. All this knowledge that I have acquired here at KMA will forever be with me.

★★★★★
This course was excellent. The only negative comment I have, is that you need to have more lighting when you are writing instructions in the lab, on the easel pad, and write larger.
-Carla D. Bengtson
★★★★★
This was my first conference. The hands-on sessions were very good. Keith’s lectures were good, but Tara’s class was the best. The way she explained things made the concepts click for me and her hands-on instruction reinforced everything she had said, she told us, she showed, she guided us as we did the exams, and we did it. This has been better than Sid Edelman’s. I loved “Sid", going through ultrasound school, but this was more hands-on, giving me the tools I needed to perform! Thanks to both of you.

I worried a lot. I thought that I would not learn what I needed but I feel totally confident that I can take the knowledge that I’ve acquired and with time and practice I can give you a thorough echocardiogram. It’s (s) wonderful educational experience. I’ve learned a great deal!!!!!

Thank you for this experience—I have learned more than I ever thought! I thought I knew everything when I came here, boy was I wrong!! The hands-on experience was great. I appreciated the way Tara made me get it perfect before I could leave. Keith was a great teacher! He was very easy to listen to and used easy-to-understand language as well as the medical lingo. Thank you for this opportunity.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this training course! I just really had “thoughts” about this course:
-You’ve both got to enjoy teaching because when it comes back to you- you know you've hit pay dirt!
-I certainly connected in some areas because we share the same thinking
Thanks for having faith in us! Thanks for the inspiration! Thanks for injecting some of life’s lessons and wisdom along with lectures. Thanks for showing such concern for our patients. That’s why we went into this business. Thanks for praising technologists! We love it! Thanks for sending us out into the world again to spread “the good word of U/S”. And probably most of all: Thanks for caring!! My hat’s off to you! In the 40 years you have been very successful in fine tuning a course that has been highly informative, extremely practical, and very entertaining.

For the first time, with the sequence used, all the pieces finally fit together. Hooray! I learned so much in such a short time. Instructors—yes you, Keith and Tara are very knowledgeable and dynamic—I feel you gave it to us straight. Thanks for that. I appreciate your dedication and unselfishness in this field—it’s a breath of fresh air to have teachers who are not watching out for themselves in the field of medicine. Thank you for making me feel I can do this! THANK YOU

This has been the best conference I have ever attended. As a respiratory therapist I came into this program out of necessity for my department. I had a strong interest in learning echo, but I had never touched a probe before. Tara and Keith not only helped me to understand the printed information and protocol, they “nurtured” me in such a way that it “demystified” the whole process. I learned more about cardiac anatomy and physiology in one day than I had known previously. I would strongly recommend their program to anyone regardless of their familiarity or expertise in echocardiography. It is money well spent!

This has been better than any other conference I have attended. I have read many physics books not understanding a word of anything. Way over my head. Just in one 8-hour day of physics here with Keith Mauney and his layman terms of explaining physics I completely understood physics, and he made it a fun way of understanding, comparing to things in everyday life. I would highly recommend this class to anyone. I learned a lot in just 2 days.
-Omedi Alvarez
★★★★★
Before coming into this program, I was a fearful cat in a big wilderness. I spoke with Tara on the phone, and she reassured me that all will be OK. Sure enough, the first six hours were the most instrumental I have ever been around. I learned so much in just those six hours and from then on to the second day will be far beyond what I can explain. The best “Fundamentals” course I have learned. This class is motivational for me—keeps me going and learning. Tara/Keith/Stan/Jake—The Best!

This has been better than any other course I have attended. I was so scared when I came, I was about to run. Not only did I stay, I signed up for another course. I stayed 3 weeks with no clothes, etc. I have never in my experience as a professional attended such an excellent course.

I have been waiting 15 years for take your course. I was always told I needed to go through a two-year program. I made a big mistake by listening to man instead of my guts. I am glad I made the choice to come. My regret if that I didn’t come 13 years ago. I want you to offer a course on Ped Echo.

My first day has been wonderful and very informative. Going from zero knowledge to knowing the fundamentals in one day is awesome. I do not feel like an idiot as I feared I would and instead, I feel as if I will comprehend and retain information with the “best of ‘em”. I still have two weeks with KMA and cannot wait to see how dramatically different I will feel and, as far as competency, when I leave. Thank you all at KMA for your knowledge and time.

Coming into this program, I had never even turned on an Echo machine. Being a Respiratory Therapist and the Manager of a Cardiopulmonary Department of a small Rural Hospital, I wanted to add Echo’s to our scope of services. After getting information on several other programs—yours seemed to offer exactly what we needed. The program is very fast paced and seems to cover much more than I expected. Keith, Tara, Molly, and Julie are extremely intelligent and talented folks who made this fast-paced program very interesting and informative. This has exceeded my expectations and with what I have learned and will continue to learn with the 2nd portion (Doppler) has made this very worthwhile. And not only has this been very informative, it was also with humor, which kept everyone’s interest. I would recommend this program to anyone who has an interest in Echo.

As s physician, this has been better than any other conference I have attended. I was extremely impressed with my instructors. Their approach and methods were unbelievable. I came into the course knowing nothing about echo. I had never held a probe. Now, 4 days later, I can obtain with confidence all of the images. I would have liked to have spent more time on the interpretation; however, I can incorporate the data with diagnosis. Overall, in the future I plan on attending other conferences the Mauneys offer. They are both excellent clinicians! I want you to offer a course on abdominal/pelvic ultrasound interpretation for physicians.

This is the first course in Echo I have attended, but comparing it to other conferences, this rates up at the top. I have truly enjoyed this course. The lectures were presented in a way to make it entertaining as well as educational! The hands-on scanning was also taught very well. I feel I can leave here with some good ground to build on and hopefully will just continue to improve. Thank you to all the instructors. It was very much appreciated!

I have two pieces of advice: 1) Make all of your future students stay at the hotel. Dallas traffic is a drag; I spent too much time behind the wheel this week. 2) In the future, female students really need to be encouraged to scan each other as a “patient” also. All in all, this has been a fun learning experience, and I thank you.

★★★★★
This course has been better than all previous I have attended. I had no previous ultrasound experience whatsoever coming into this seminar. Now after only 7 days I feel I can leave here and do a complete and accurate cardiac echo. This course has far exceeded all my expectations. Keith and Tara, and all other instructors are intelligent, patient, and professional. Keith is probably the most intelligent man I have ever met. And I have met many very, very smart people. He is inspiring in not only this course of study, but in life in general. If I acquire 1/8th of the knowledge, he has in my lifetime I will feel I have succeeded. On that note, if I become 1/8th the technician that Tara is, I will feel equally successful. Thank you both for this wonderful experience. I hope to see you both again in the future. If anybody asks about my experience here, I will tell them, no matter who they are or what they do, that they need to attend this course. If they don’t ever want to do ultrasound ever again, they would have learned something from Keith and/or Tara that will inspire them in life. I will tell them without hesitation that “Keith and Tara WILL change your life forever.” Thank you both very much. Keith- with nothing to do with ultrasound, do a self-improvement seminar.
-Trevor Clayborn
★★★★★
This has been better than American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine conference and all biased pharmaceutical-sponsored conferences. I am impressed with the quality of information presented. Being able to present/teach this subject to people with such a broad range of starting points (in terms of a baseline fund of knowledge) and at the end have everyone speaking the same language is impressive. I must admit that at times during the lecture I became a bit anxious, wanting to fast-forward. I understand everyone needs to “speak the same language” prior to moving on to application of those principles to echo findings though. In any case it was relaxing to sit unhurried, unpressured and listen to excellent teaching of a subject that I love to think about. I learned much more (relatively) in the scanning lab, applying echo findings to known physiology/anatomy/pathology of the heart and gaining the Hands-On experience. I really appreciate the open hours of the scanning lab. It was a good decision to attend this conference, and I know it will serve me well as in move forward with echocardiography. As I told the cardiologist I will be working with— “I want to do this right, not just do it.” I’m on my way. Would I change anything about the course? In my case, I think the lecture could have been compressed to 1-2 days but that’s OK, I enjoyed it anyway. And I paid attention to every word!

★★★★★
I have really enjoyed this course. It had a good balance between lecture and scanning time. Although I have been performing echoes for a few years, it has given me a lot of information that is up to date. I have always scanned right-handed and although it was very much different for me to scan left-handed, this was exactly what I wanted, to learn how to scan hearts left-handed. I want you to offer a course on maybe just “Hands-On”, where someone critiques my scanning and teaches protocols.
-Christina S.
★★★★
This course has been better than all. Conversations and lectures were very interesting. I was very impressed. I was surprised at how much I learned in such little time; I didn’t think it was possible. In fact, the thing I was afraid of was coming here and still having a lot of learning to do or not feeling comfortable scanning when I go back to my facility. At this point, I feel comfortable with what I learned, and I feel like I can scan (with supervision) and won’t be “sitting along the sidelines” observing. I’ve realized that with ultrasound you can’t learn anything without getting in there and scanning and confidence is the most important thing when showing your case to the physician. I feel that I have accomplished all of this. I have a co-worker that has training (cross-training) and just needs help with protocols and measurements. I think it would be helpful to her for someone to guide her and correct her and be critical of her scanning. It’s very hard for me to be critical because I work with her and feel it would put a “cringe” in our work environment. I’m younger and she’s been doing ultrasound longer than me. Yet the Doc’s do not like her scans and do not feel comfortable signing their names to her work.

This has been better than (Sidney) Edelman’s classes. This is a great course for techs who have little or no Echo experience. However, there should or needs to be a course for the tech that has been scanning for some time and needs to fine-tune or learn new techniques of Echocardiography. I want you to offer a course on fine-tuning echocardiograms.

I came to this course with no clinical experience in anything and no prior ultrasound experience. A cardiologist had suggested me learning echo and thought it was a good field even if I was planning to go to medical school. So, I came in thinking if the other techs could do it, so could I and was very ready to be challenged. Mr. Mauney gave me aa thorough understanding of echo. It was an excellent compilation of theory and hands-on. I really got my brain thinking and feel completely re-energized in all aspects of career, future plans, and just confidence in myself and what I am capable of. I cannot wait to start and have a million ideas of my next move in this came of life and Echo. THANKS SO MUCH!

I’ve learned so much more than just Echo over the past week that ho other conference has ever touched on. I can’t recommend you high enough to anyone pursuing a career in ultrasound, and I look forward to future meetings with your program. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for the field of ultrasound.

Kieth (sic) I would prefer that lectures have less verbiage; more compact. I could consume more information in the lecture that way. I would prefer a timed schedule, follow a written outline/handout. It was at times a little hard for me to follow. Tara’s Q&A approach didn’t connect with me. Strengths: clearly, your knowledge and sense of service and caring for us was great. I want you to offer an ultrasound course for Primary Care Physicians. Thank you for the privilege of learning and meeting you. I will take you in my heart.

I was not as impressed with Molly’s teaching as I was with Keith’s. The flow in the hands-on sessions was not as serial and easy to follow. There was more discussion that was applicable to me in Keith’s lecture. There was plenty of scanning experience and I enjoyed it. Thanks!

Thank you! As usual the KMA teaching tools and Staff are great. The information provided us is clear and whether one is a first-time scanner in this area or have been routinely doing the exam, it seems useful. I want you to offer a course on Pediatric Echocardiography.

★★★★★
This has been better than a Mammography Course I attended in Wisconsin. Upon arrival the 1st 2 days, I was of course overwhelmed with the amount of material I was being given. However, I expected to be overwhelmed, due to the fact that I was cross training over to ultrasound, as a beginner. KMA Lab hands-on experiences diligently work very hard on giving the student a precise step-by-step approach to the abdominal exam. (In my case.). They also stress the importance of not just being a “picture taker”. Our Lab instructor, Molly, was incredible with her vast knowledge and her way of explaining it to her student that might be “a tad” confused. I also enjoyed immensely the lecture sessions with Keith. Although we were a “quiet crew”, the class is welcoming time and time again. I never felt like I would ask a “stupid question”. The class size was perfect. It allowed me to freely partake in scanning for extended periods of time.

Thank you for “demystifying” ultrasound for me. As an Internist, the most exciting thig I can do is to make the diagnosis. Ultrasound is now another power tool in my diagnostic black bag. Since doing “point of care” imaging (since my last course with you 5-month s ago) I have been thrilled to have this extension to my stethoscope. Ultrasound in the hands of the physician-- or an ultrasonographer who considers themselves part of the care team—is an invaluable resource. Your presentation (and Molly’s help) exceeded my expectations.

This has been better than any other course I have attended. Once again, KMA has me realize just how special their course is. This course is built on excellence and quality. KMA is truly the leader in ultrasound education. I have recommended this course to many of my friends and co-workers, and a few have attended, and I have only heard rave reviews. Keith, Tara, “Joe Echo” and Molly are all wonderful people. I’m glad that they ate all willing to share their vast knowledge of this field. I feel this course is a big impact on the Ultrasound Profession. KMA has made me want to increase my knowledge more and more each time I’ve been here. Thank you for taking a kid who knew nothing and instilling confidence and the tools to travel the right road to a positive worthwhile future. Thank you.

After taking Cardiac and Vascular in early 2001 I picked up a probe for the first time in two years and scanned a carotid for a job interview. All of my teaching came right back. Then in the fall of 2003 I was being scanned while at Abdominal and helping the Cardiac Class, while on the table my cardiac training started coming right back as well. Thanks, Keith and Tara.

This has been better than Texas Society of Radiological Technologist meetings. The course was very informational and interesting. I enjoyed Keith’s style of teaching: the applicable stories along with the visuals and animated gestures. The Lab Instructor was very helpful and the hands-on training was exciting and fun. The course greatly exceeded all of my expectations, and I hope to return for additional training in the near future.

My entire reason for attending this specific seminar was to have hands-on training. I believe this is the best and only way to learn. Anybody can stand up and lecture all day, but to have hands-on training is a must. Since I already do cardiac and vascular, it was important for me to establish my scanning protocols. I think this is a good place to start my abdomen ultrasound career. I want you to offer a Refresher Course for already registered Techs. I think it would be beneficial for learning updated techniques.
-Malea Herring
★★★★★
This is the first conference I’ve attended after X-Ray school. Thank you! I have learned so much this week. I had never scanned before and you made this totally possible and understandable for me. I will be back for future conferences… and I’ll also be singing your praises to anyone interested in ultrasound.

The conference overall was great! The two techs that came here with me, had no prior experience in US before. Now they feel they have a good base to work from. I had prior experience (even though it was 12 years ago), but the info was great for a refresher.

It would be more beneficial for current sonographers to in a separate program form complete beginners. Perhaps more pathology could be covered for the current sonographer. I came to this conference with basically no knowledge of ultrasound except limited pelvic ultrasound of the bladder. I had never seen ultrasounds before and I had real reports but I was never sure of what I had seen ore read, This training has far exceeded my expectations and I have gained so much knowledge—everything is falling into place, I am excited to start this journey (the first time in some time) and hope to continue. I will be back for further training.

Molly—EXCELLENT instructor. She presented all material in a manner that was easy to understand information and to the point. This has been better than the Echo Conference at University of Alabama. Mr. Keith Mauney has and interesting way of teaching. He grabs your attention and keeps you interested by his style. A lot of the points stick in my mind because of the comparisons he made to non-medical things. He does not talk down to the audience. He really seems like he is enjoying what he is doing.

The last thirty minutes of class was most informative for me. The videos that showed a real time exam and date the last day of lecture more understandable. Perhaps more case studies with examples (of disease) would help support a fuller understanding and integration of the info. Many examples of physiologic arterial pressure testing were given, which added in my learning and comfortability in reading this test. At times I felt overwhelmed with information, but I think the lecturer’s statement that I will appreciate what was gleaned for years to come. This is a beginning.

This has been as good as (the) Sid Edelman ultrasound course. The pressure on Wednesday shut me down—I did not remember the info (or) gain info and I felt I had to start over.
